For 20ft and 40ft reefer containers, 15 kW gensets are usually used. When selecting equipment, it is first necessary to determine the type of equipment required for transportation. To do this, it is important to understand what type of transport will be used — road or rail. It is also necessary to know the duration of transportation to determine the appropriate equipment type. Proper calculations take into account the electrical power and starting currents of the refrigeration equipment. For long-distance transportation, it is recommended to choose a genset with an increased fuel tank capacity. When selecting a used generator, important parameters include the year of manufacture and the number of operating hours.
What is the difference between a clip-on genset and an underslung genset?
The difference between the two types of generators is that a Clip-on genset is a mounted model attached to the end of the container and can be easily removed when necessary, while an Underslung genset is installed permanently under the chassis of the container trailer and is usually used for continuous autonomous transportation of temperature-sensitive cargo by road.
How to calculate the power of a diesel generator for a reefer container?
For stable operation of a refrigerated container, the power of the diesel generator is recommended to be selected with a 20–30% reserve relative to the power consumption of the refrigeration unit. This is necessary due to the high starting currents of the compressor.
How much fuel does a genset (diesel generator) consume for a reefer container?
Depending on the required temperature setting, the difference between the set and ambient temperatures, as well as the genset (diesel generator) model, the average fuel consumption of a diesel generator for a reefer container ranges from 2 to 4 liters per hour. Fuel consumption may increase if the container insulation is damaged, the temperature of the loaded cargo differs significantly from the required temperature, or the container refrigeration equipment is not functioning correctly.
